Le nom est originaire du Tarn. Il s'agit d'un toponyme correspondant à un ancien domaine, devenu par la suite village ou hameau. L'origine semble le nom de personne gaulois Caraius, auquel s'est ajouté le suffixe -onem. Toujours dans le Tarn, on trouve le toponyme Carayol, lui aussi devenu patronyme, qui a la même origine (suffixe -olum).
